- H. P. Lovecraft's Cthulhu is a colossal alien monster who came to earth eons ago. He ruled the earth for ages until the stars went out of alinement causing his island city, R'lyeh to sink to the bottom of the Pacific Ocean where Cthulhu sleeps to this day. Cthulhu sends his dreams out into the world where human beings receive them, and have assembled all of the world's religions & supernatural ideologies from these dreams.
- Wilcox's dreams of a "gigantic thing miles high" gives us some sense of scale, but the most detailed depictions of Cthulhu come from descriptions of statues made in his likeness. One such statue made by an artist after a series of dreams, is said to have...
..."yielded simultaneous pictures of an octopus, a dragon, and a human caricature [...] A pulpy, tentacled head surmounted a grotesque and scaly body with rudimentary wings".
Another statue recovered from a murderous cult by police... "represented a monster of vaguely anthropoid outline, but with an octopus-like head whose face was a mass of feelers, a scaly, rubbery-looking body, prodigious claws on hind and fore feet, and long, narrow wings behind."
